Another release from 215 Records. Another "not
for everyone" album. Another example of quality
music... This time the abstract culprit is Greek.
The Preferred Remedy is one of those albums that
tests the limits of what is and what isn't Hip Hop.
Greek's music is no doubt Hip Hop but resides on the
far left alongside all of the Kool Keith material. One
of the few cuts with a phat funky groove that has the
ability to make all heads nod is the clever reworking
of a classic Eagles sample now given new life as The
Perfect Storm. This may be the one that pops up on mixtapes
and makes noise across the country. On much of the rest
of The Preferred Remedy, Greek employs more of a syncopated
spoken word delivery than a typical rap cadence. Evidence
in Different, Bitter, Demented Nerd and Bait + Tackle.
For most of the Philly Hip Hop audience I'd recommend
listening to The Preferred Remedy before buying it.
Not because it lacks but more so because it's not the
style of Hip Hop that we're accustomed to consuming.
For those who are happy eating the same fast food every
day, take a pass. Greek's music is for those who are
apt to venture into an unfamiliar local restaurant.
